Farmers markets can be overwhelming, especially on your first trip. There’s usually a good amount of shouting from grocers, bustling people everywhere and seasonal fresh fruits and veggies as far as the eye can see. Just like you prepare strategies and moves for soccer games to be able to walk out with the best possible outcome, you need to go in with a basic list and plan of attack. The goal in your farmer's market trip would be to leave with a haul of fresh foods.
In honor of National Farmers Market Week, we wanted to give you a rundown of best fresh and organic finds for socceristas shopping at their local markets. Farmers markets typically offer more bang for your buck and allow you to get more fruits and veggies for less than you would at the grocery store. You can easily get organic produce options and sometimes even talk to the farmers who grow them. You get the opportunity to discuss what is or isn’t natural or organic based on pesticide usage on crops. So it's a win-win.
A few essential produce items to pick up that can be used in a variety of energizing dishes, perfect for pre- or post-game fuel are leafy greens, apples, beets, berries and tomatoes. Grass-fed meat and farm-fresh eggs will also not only taste better, but are better for you when purchased directly at a market instead of at a grocery or big box store.
Aside from fresh and local produce, farmers markets will typically have stands from local merchants and food companies offering a variety of additional goodies, such as homemade breads, artisan cheeses, fresh pasta, jams and jellies. If you’re in need of a sweet treat, there are usually baked goods and treats too. Since these are usually made in smaller batches compared to what you can get on your grocery store shelves, you won’t find the ingredient list loaded with chemicals and things you can’t pronounce!
