Top 5 Goals: NCAA Tournament

The NCAA tournament is finally here, and the madness has truly begun. The first round just wrapped up on Sunday, and there were already some surprising results. Washington State upset No. 8 ranked UCF. The other top seeds all advanced, but some performances were prettier than others. There were also some incredible goals being scored in crunchtime. Let’s take a look at some of the best from the first round of the tournament.

5. Erika Okuma- USC

Top ranked USC really had to sweat it out in their first round matchup against Eastern Washington. The Eagles managed to take USC into overtime, but the Trojans would come through in the clutch to advance. The ESU keeper parried the ball into the path of Erika Okuma, who managed to apply the final touch to secure a win. USC keeps on dancing into the second round.

4. Imani Dorsey- Duke

Imani Dorsey would prove to be the difference between Duke and UNC Greensboro with her nice solo effort. She stole the ball on an errant pass and took advantage of a lack of ball pressure from the Spartans. Dorsey tucked the ball into the far corner to give Duke a lead the team would never relinquish. The Blue Devils keep winning with help from many different place. We’ll see if they keep that going against Oklahoma State in the next round.

3. Kia Rankin- NC State

NC State would prove to be too much for the Arkansas Razorbacks with a convincing 4-1 win. This goal from Kia Rankin was a classy finish to say the least. She received the ball in space before cutting inside onto her left foot and getting a clean strike on the ball. It found the inside of the post and went in for Rankin and the Wolfpack. NC State will have a much tougher challenge when they play the ranked Princeton Tigers in the next round.

2. Abby Elinsky- North Carolina

The Tar Heels managed to dispatch the High Point Panthers with a 3-0 win in their first round matchup. This was the kind of goal that really showed how big of a gap in quality there was between the two sides. North Carolina was allowed to move the ball wherever the team wanted, and Elinsky ended the move with a deadly strike. Colorado has its hands full and then some when the team takes on the Tar Heels in Round 2.

1. Brianna Visalli- Pepperdine

Senior Brianna Visalli might have scored the goal of her life, and it was the game-winner in a big 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton. She picked her head up and saw a small opening, but Visalli still had so much to do. This ball comes off her foot like a knuckleball, and the keeper clearly had a tough time with the shot before it went in. Pepperdine will need the magic to continue when they take on Virginia in the next round.
